Denise Malan

Data Director

Denise Malan has been a journalist for more than 10 years, covering government, education, politics, the environment and enterprise stories on a variety of subjects.

Several years ago, she finally found a place to use her physics degree in journalism when she discovered data reporting through IRE/NICAR.

She was data/investigative editor at the Corpus Christi Caller-Times in Texas for three years, and in June 2013 she became data director for the Investigative News Network and IRE, coordinating data projects among nonprofit newsrooms across the country. Currently, she leads IRE's training and data services team, training journalists on watchdog and data journalism techniques at conferences, workshops, boot camps and custom trainings.
