Subervi

Director, Dr. Federico Subervi

Dr Federico Subervi is Full Professor and Director of the Center for the Study of Latino Media and Markets at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Texas State University-San Marcos. He earned his BA in Social Sciences and his MA is Public Communication from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras campus. His Ph.D. in Mass Communication was earned at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Since the early 1980s, he has been conducting research, publishing and teaching on broad range of issues related to the mass media and ethnic minorities, especially Latinos in the United States. In addition to more than fifty journal articles, essays, book chapters and reports on these subjects, he is the editor and author of the book The Mass Media and Latino Politics. Studies of U.S. Media Content, Campaign Strategies and Survey Research: 1984-2004 (NY: Routledge, 2008). In 2012, the Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication honored him with the Leonel L. Barrow, Jr. Award for Distinguished Achievement in Diversity Research and Education.
Currently, thanks to support from the Communication Workers of America and the Newspaper Guild, he is analyzing how Latinos and Latino issues, as well as labor and labor issues have been covered by national TV network news (ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN). With his students, he continues to assess Latino political communication especially during the 2012 presidential campaign. Among other recent projects, in 2011 with funding from the Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility, he completed a study on the research methodologies utilized to study Hispanic consumers by national consumer research companies. A summary of the finding was published as a chapter in the 2012 book, Win! The Hispanic Market, Edited by Isabel Valdés. In 2010, with a grant from the McCormick Foundation, he conducted a study and authored a report entitled "An Anchilles Heel in Emergency Communications: The Deplorable Policies and Practices Pertaining to Non-English Speaking Populations." From 2006-2008, he directed two research projects, one funded by the Ford Foundation, the other by the Social Science Research Council, which analyzed the diversity of Latino-oriented media in Central Texas.
In January 2011 he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Latino Public Radio Consortium. In June that year and again in August 2012, he was elected as the first professor to serve as Academic Officer on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. To help the Latino community in Texas, from 2002-2007 he served as Chair of the Board of Directors of Latinitas, Inc., a non-profit organization with whose vision is to empower Latino youth through media and technology.
Dr. Subervi has been Fulbright Research Professor in Brazil (1988-89) and in Chile (2011). He has held academic appointments at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of California-Santa Barbara, has been UNESCO professor at the Universidad de Metodista de Sáo Paulo, and visiting professor at the University of Amsterdam, the Universidad Diego Portales and the University of Santiago in Chile, the Universidad Federal de Río Grande de Norte en Natal-Brazil, the University of Zeppelin in Germany, and the Instituto de Comunicación, Artes y Humanidades de Monterrey, Mexico. Subervi has delivered academic presentations in numerous other universities in the U.S. and Latin America, and was one of the cultural consultants for Nickelodeon's Dora the Explorer and the Scholastic Entertainment's The Misadventures of Maya and Miguel.
Dr. Subervi serves on the editorial boards for Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Journalism Educator, Journalism & Communication Monographs, and The Howard Journal of Communications. He has been featured in iLatino TV, and over the years has been interviewed and quoted for stories in CNN International, CNN Español, The New York Times, The Lost Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, The San Francisco Chronicle, the Las Vegas Sun, The Miami Herald, the Huffington Post, the British Broadcasting Corporation, AP Wire Services, Hispanic Business, Hispanic Magazine, La Opinión (Los Angeles), El Diario-La Prensa (New York), El Nuevo Día (Puerto Rico), Al Día (Dallas), Univisión, Latino USA, Folha de Sao Paulo, and Hispanic Trends, among others.

Assistant Director, Dr. Sindy Chapa

Dr. Sindy Chapa has a Ph.D. in International Business and a Master in Business Administration -with a concentration in Marketing. She has taught marketing courses for 10 years in the United States, Mexico and Chile. Her research focuses on the effect of advertising strategies on Latino consumer. In 2008, Dr. Chapa joined Texas State University with the purpose of creating the Center for the Study of Latino Media and Markets. Since then, Dr. Chapa, an Assistant Professor, is the current Associate Director of the Center at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Texas State University-San Marcos.

As an active faculty researcher at the Center, Dr. Chapa conducts cross-cultural studies related to advertising, and Latino consumer behavior. Dr. Chapa’s interest in cross-cultural and Latino- oriented research has grown out of her experience in Mexico, China, Cuba, Peru and Chile where she has conducted several studies on consumer decision-making and advertising. Dr. Chapa has articles forthcoming and has published in the International Journal of Advertising, International Business & Economics Research, Journal of Marketing Communication, Journal of Spanish Language Media, Journal of Consumer Behavior, Journal of Multidisciplinary Business Review, Journal of Current Issues and Research in Advertising, Consumption, Markets and Culture: Resonant Representations, International Journal of Business Disciplines, and the Journal of International Consumer Marketing. She has presented research at numerous conferences, including the American Marketing Association, World Marketing Conference, the Academy of Marketing Science and the Association for Consumer Research.
As a professor, she has been selected this year as “Favorite Professor” by the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society. In addition, her dedication to the graduate students has been quite evident. Until this day, 9 graduate students’ projects mentored by Dr. Chapa have been presented in national and international conferences. Dr. Chapa teaches Research Methods, International Advertising, Music Marketing and Media: with emphasis in the Latino market, Promotional Strategy and Marketing Management.
Dr. Chapa received the “2011-2012 Presidential Excellence Award in Service” in the junior faculty category at Texas State University. She served as an active service leader by organizing the Spanish International Documentary Festival Puntos de Vista 2010 and 2011;co-chairing the Latinos a Salvo Forum on Emergency communication pertaining to non-English-speaking populations, and the International Conference of the State of the Spanish-language Media. Dr. Chapa is also a member of the American Marketing Association, Society for Marketing Advances and Association for Consumer Research. She also serves on the editorial review board for the Journal of Spanish Language Media.
Olga

PR Director, Olga Mayoral Wilson, APR

Olga Mayoral Wilson, APR, teaches Public Relations as an adjunct lecturer, at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and volunteers as the Public Relations Director at The Center, since 2009.  Mayoral Wilson is APR, Accredited in Public Relations by the Universal Accreditation Board of the Public Relations Society of America, and holds a Public Relations Professional License (Licensing #191-Puerto Rico, 10/10).

Former communication advisor to CEOs at the “C” suite of major Fortune 500 corporations, Mayoral-Wilson brings diverse professional, academic and mentoring experience that extends from the Pacific in the State of Hawaii to the U.S., in Washington, D.C., and Virginia, and to Puerto Rico in the Caribbean. She holds a M.A. in International Studies from Old Dominion University, VA, and a B.A., English and French Literature, from the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico.  In 2007, she received the “PR Professional of the Year” Award conferred by the Puerto Rico Public Relations Association (ARPPR) and in 2004, the “Francisco ‘Paco’ Oller Creativity in Public Relations Award” by the ARPPR while at Banco Popular de Puerto Rico, as Public Relations & Communications Division Senior VP.

Kimberly Hurst

Kimberly is the Internship Program Coordinator for the Center of the Study of Latino Media Markets and teaching assistant for Dr. Chapa. She is a second year graduate student pursuing her M.A. in Mass Communication with a concentration in Strategic Communication at Texas State University. Her current line of research focuses on the use and effects of religion in political advertising. Kimberly has a B.S. in Advertising and a B.S. in Public Relations with a focus in business foundations from the University of Texas at Austin. She has worked as a media consultant and account representative. Kimberly’s interests include advertising and politics. After completing her degree, Kimberly plans to pursue a career in political communication and advertising.

Eva Fuentes

Eva Fuentes

Eva is originally from Brownsville where she attended Homer Hanna High School.  She completed her undergraduate degree at The University of Texas at Austin.  After twelve years as a social studies composite teacher, she decided to return to graduate school and study music heritage with a concentration in Musica Tejana.  Additional research interests include traditional Mexican music, Roots music and Mexican American studies.  Her profile can be found at: http://txstate.academia.edu/EvaFuentes


 

Karen Buenrostro

Karen Buenrostro

Karen is a senior at Texas State University persuing a double major in Electronic Media and Spanish. She has been an intern at El Centro for the past three semesters and currently serves as the newsletter manager where she manages the content for the newsletter and provides guidance to editors and writers. After graduation, Karen plans to help further research the impact of Latinos in the current media. She dreams to pursue a career in Spanish News Broadcasting and travel to South America.

Lorenzo

Lorenzo Almanza

Lorenzo is a sophomore at Texas State University. He is a mass communication major and is minoring in Political Communication. He is from Dallas, Texas and is a first generation student. He is currently part of the universitie's debate team on campus, vice-president of First Generation Student Organization, and a member of Hombres Unifos. This will be Lorenzo's second year at El Centro and he hopes to fully contribute to the newletter and research team. He plans to someday be a political journalist.

Marcus

Marcus Avila

Marcus is a junior at Texas State Universiy and is majoring in International Business with a minor in Fashion Merchandising, while completing his certificate in the Latin American Business Program. He is the presdent for Texas State's FashionNation. His organiation brings together students with an interest in the fashion industry, to share ideas and produce fashion shows. He enjoys the fashion industry, the Latin American world, innovative ideas, political science, and learning new languages like Portuguese. When he graduates, Marcus hopes to work abroad in Mexico or Brazil for Conde Nast, or for a fashion company such as ZARA in Spain. He hopes to one day do what Angelica Cheung has done for China. 

Michael

Michael Kasprzynski

Michael is a senior at Texas State University majoring in English and minoring in Political Science. He is the Social Media Coordinator for El Centro and the vice-president of El Centro's Student Organization. Michael started his own club, Bobcats of the Rio Grande Valley to be a guiding organization home away from home. After graduation, Michael plans on attending law school and eventually open up his own practice.

Selinda

Selinda Sanchez

Selinda was born and raised in Zapata, Texas and is proud to be a small-town, family-oriented Latina. Selinda is a senior majoring in Mass Communication-Public Relations and minoring in Spanish. Selinda is interning for a second year at El Centro. She is also serving as Editor-in-Chief of the Newsletter. Aside from CSLMM, Selinda holds an internship position at the Texas State University's Sports Information Department. After graduation, Selinda plans on taking her PR to next level by working for the NFL, completing her Master's Degree and one day opening her own PR firm to represent the Entertainment Industry. Selinda enjoys sports, reading, sleeping and loves technology.

Bianka V

Bianka Valdez

Bianka is a senior at Texas State University majoring in public relations with a minor in communication studies and pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree. Bianka is a public relations intern as well as the website coordinator for El Centro. She is also a social media specialist and is working on her personalized blog and website. Bianka is from Austin, Texas but hopes to one day go back to Colombia, where she spent a summer after graduating high school to improve her Spanish skills. She hopes to travel to Costa Rica, Spain and to Lampazos de Naranjo, Mexico where her family is from.

Valeria

Valeria Gonzalez

Valeria is an international student from Mexcio City. She is currently a sophomore at Texas State, but plans to graduate next fall. As an Electronic Media major and Music minor, she is very passionate about the entertainment industry, mainly music and film. She says that being from one of the largest cities in the world, she wants to raise awareness of the urban Latino culture among her community. Her experiences as a volunteer at various events such as SXSW and Cine Las Americas have created in her a love for event production. She is currently a productions intern at El Centro and will be helping with the Puntos de Vista 2013 festival. She is also a GRAMMY U Campus Ambassador, KTSW 89.9 production assistant, and Latinitas Magazine voluntter. After graduation, she plans on getting a Master's degree in Audio Engineering and working for a live event/concert production company.

Bianka Martinez

Bianka is a freshman at Texas State University pursuing a degree in Biology. She hopes to one day become a Physician's Assistant. She is a volunteer for El Centro and would like to gain a broader perspective on the importance of her culture through serving the Latino community.

Cesar Cisneros

Cesar is a proud Texas State Senior from Brownsville, Texas. He was raised close to his prideful heritage and loved every bit of it. His major is Journalism with a minor in Creative Writing. He is a blogger of videogame news, previews and reviews, but is currently broadening his blogger spectrum. Cesar is currently a writer for El Centro's Newsletter and looks forward to bringing the news in his own words to the attention of the Latino community. After graduation, he hopes to became a well-known journalist within his community.

Laura is a senior at Texas State pursuing a BA in Advertising and minoring in Fashion Merchandising. This will be her first semester interning at El Centro. She is also currently interning as a Junior Designer at Cultural Strategies, a multicultural communication agency in Austin. Her dream career is working as the Art Director for a fashion magazine.

Lou Aguiar

Lou is from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil and is currently a junior at Texas State University. Her major is Public Relations and her minor is Spanish. Lou expects to graduate in 2014 and hoping to gain some Public Relations experience by interning at El Centro. Interning with El Centro will be her motivation to pursue her future career goals.

Olivia is from Frisco, Texas and is studying Advertising at Texas State. She has a passion for photography and design and has been privileged to apply her passions in and around her community through designing and photographing for the Texas Legends. She has also done photography for Hillary Anne Photogtaphy, and has designed for Frisco Sports Center. She is exciting to contribute her passions and talents to El Centro Student Orgnization and gain experience in the Latin media culture.

Richard

Richard Garza

Richard is from Rio Grande City and is majoring in Aquatic Biology. He is a freshman at Texas State University and will be graduating with the class of 2016. Richard enjoys photogrpahy, the marine life, and generally being involved with the community. He enjoying the quiet to think. He would lik to someday become a leader and be able to do task on his own. He plans to get a job in his career field and move to Australia and continure his education there.

Rob Helms

Robert is from Houston, the suburb of Pearland. He graduated from Texas State University-San Marcos in May of 2011 with a BA in Mass Communication, minor in anthropology. He is currently in his second year of his Mass Communication -New Media concentration MA, which he expects to complete in May of 2013. His interests include technology, media, business, philosophy, and the law. He is a volunteer research intern for Professor Subervi at El Centro and one of his graduate students.

Rut Vargas

Rut is a senior at Texas State plaing to graduate in December 2012 to complete her degree in International Studies with a focus in Tourism. Rut is originally from Mexico, born and raised in Salvatierra, Guanajuato. She moved to Texas seven years ago and has acquired valuable knowledge during her life here and time studying at Texas State. As a multicultural individual, she can now apply her knowledge to achieve her goals. El Centro really called her attention through the emerging communicatin fields, and she decided to volunteer to learn more about any great knowledge that will become a useful tool and great appeal for job searching when she graduates. She plans to be a part of El Centro for any projects that need translation since she in fluent in Spanish. She plans to acquite new skills and be able to discover all those ooportunities that the new trends in communication, marketing, and web-based fields have to offer.

Tiffany Lurate

Tiffany is a senior at Texas State University majoring in Public Relations with a minor in Psychology. She is a volunteer at El Centro. She has gained many valuable skills through her work with Texas State's Bobcat Promotions. Bobcat Promotions is a full-service agency that offers hands of experience in public relations, event planning, marketing and advertising to local businesses. Her passions are writing, reporting of events, issues, trends and Public Relations oriented work. After graduation, she plans on pursuing a career in Public Relations.

Michele Anderson

Michele Anderson

Michele is a senior at Texas State University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in public relations with a minor in psychology and is expected to graduate December 2013. She was born in Indiana and raised in El Paso, Texas. In January 2014, she will be moving to Monterrey, México to start her career.She is a public relations and marketing intern at El Centro and a social media content creator for two non-profit organization blogs and other social media outlets. In the past, she has interned for Austin Film Festival and KTSW- San Marcos, completed two summers of an extensive direct sales program and volunteered for the internationally known festival, SXSW.Michele is a current active member of the campus organizations like El Centro, Student Event Planner’s Association and Allies of Texas State.

Bianca Garibay

Bianca was born in the small border town of Acuña Coahuila, Mexico. She proudly believes to be Texas raised but is also proud of her heritage and most importantly her culture, which she values the most. Bianca is pursuing a degree in Mass Communications and her dream is to double major in public relations and Spanish. As a new volunteer for El Centro she hopes to give back to the Latino community while gaining experience in the field. She enjoys music, dancing and poetry. Some of her favorite authors include, Spanish dramatist Federico Garcia Lorca, Chilean Poet Pablo Neruda and Mexican novelist Laura Esquivel among others.
Aj Arreguin

Aj Arreguin

Alexis James Arreguin, introduces himself as A.J., is a senior from Laredo, Texas attending Texas State University. A.J. is pursuing a double major degree in public relations and Spanish in hopes of working at ESPN. A.J. is an extremist when it comes to sports like basketball, football, baseball, golf and weight training. This is his first year volunteering/interning at El Centro and is excited to be part of this great organization.
Misaki Terashima

Misaki Terashima

Misaki is from Sendai city in Japan. She graduated from Texas State with MA in political science in December of 2012. Misaki is a part of the research team at El Centro and assists Dr. Chapa with research projects. She was also a graduate research assistant to Dr. Subervi, and enjoyed working with him to code Latino news. Her study interests include social identity, media, and political participation. It is a great opportunity for her to be a part of El Centro because she can learn the importance of the Latino community in the U.S., their identities, and culture in addition to research method knowledge. She loves Latino culture especially dancing salsa, bachata, and merengue.

Diane Peters

Diane is a proud Bobcat and senior at Texas State University pursuing a degree in Mass Communication and minor in Spanish. This is her first semester volunteering for El Centro, and would like to gain experience in the media field. After graduation, she aspires to be a bilingual journalist in the Austin area.
 
Maegan Zimmerman

Maegan Zimmerman

Maegan is a senior at Texas State University majoring in public relations with a minor in psychology. She plans to graduate in May 2013. After graduation her goal is to pursue a graduate degree, also at Texas State in either business or communications. One of her favorite past times is reading leisure books. Maegan is from Harker Heights, Texas, which is within 20 minutes of Fort Hood Military Base and is one of the biggest military bases in the U.S. This has given her experience with people from different parts of the world. Maegan has one sibling who attends the University of Texas at Austin, and both parents have computer science degrees from Central Texas Community College.
 
Jacob Garcia

Jacob Garcia

Born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley, Jacob transferred to Texas State the fall of 2011 with hopes to better his education. He is a junior majoring in communication design. He plans to provide El Centro with a graphic design skills and knowledge.
Delma Limones

Delma Limones

Delma is an advertising major with a computer science minor from Houston, TX. She enjoys learning and discussing about various media topics and the importance of diversity. Delma is also a member of the Advertising Club and Feminists United and is currently an intern at Austin Vida. She is excited to join El Centro to learn and contribute to its mission.
