David Nelson is both a professor at the SJMC at Texas State and also Associate Dean of University College.  In 1987 Nelson received a Ph.D in Educational Administration from Purdue and since has had a highly successful career in academia at Purdue and at Texas State.
 
Nelson has been honored with numerous awards, such as a Presidential Citation by the College Media Advisers in 1988, '89, '90, '91, '92 and '93.  He has served as a Senior Fellow on the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and received an award for Outstanding Service to New Students.  Among other accomplishments, Nelson founded a mentor program, matching University Star editors with faculty members who have similar interests.  Nelson is also a distinguished speaker who has been invited to discuss the pedagogical role of the college press at workshops around the country.
