In 1992, after more than two decades of work in the media, both print and broadcast, Susan Weill decided to focus her career plans on teaching and research. She received a Ph.D. in communication from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1998 and her doctoral research was released as a book, "In a Madhouse's Din: Civil Rights Coverage by Mississippi's Daily Press, 1948-1968" (Praeger, 2002). She has taught in Canada and Jamaica as a Fulbright Senior Specialist.
Weill is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC), the International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF) and the American Journalism Historians Association (AJHA). She is the co-advisor, along with Kym Fox and Gilbert Martinez, of the student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
