Advising

Advising

What is advising?
Advising is an ongoing developmental process whereby a student and professional staff advisor discuss, define and evaluate academic and career goals and then plan a course of action in attempt to achieve these goals.

When do I need to see an advisor?
You will want to meet with your advisor regularly. Most students will find meeting with an advisor each semester very helpful.

Please don’t hesitate to see an advisor if you have a concern or want to plan for the future. Advisors are available year round (not just around registration time). You can make an appointment by calling 512.245.2656.

Who is my advisor?
The School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) professional advisors work specifically with SJMC students. To allow student choice and flexibility we don’t assign students to a specific advisor. Students can continue to meet with the same advisor from appointment to appointment or they can switch advisors.

SJMC advisors are very versed in the whole curriculum (core, B.A./B.S., minor, etc) required to complete a Bachelor’s Degree. In addition they are specialists in the mass communication major and curricula.

SJMC advisors serve all JMC majors which include advertising, electronic media (radio/TV), journalism and public relations majors. In addition they serve mass communication minors and journalism minors.
