About the SJMC

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication is nationally accredited by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC).  About 25% of mass communication programs nationwide are accredited.  Our program is the only accredited program in the Texas State University System and we are one of four public universities in Texas that are accredited.

We are housed in historic Old Main atop Chautauqua hill.  The structure, often featured in university literature, contains a radio station, faculty offices, “smart classrooms”, state-of-the-art computer lab, television editing facilities and the Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication.  Texas State has been teaching journalism and mass communication for more than half a century.

Currently, we have approximately 1,700 majors in our undergraduate and graduate program.  This makes us one of the largest programs in the state.  The school is a recipient of a Ford Foundation grant to develop a Latino Media and Markets Program in 2005.  In 2006, students involved with student media received more than forty awards and citations from the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association.   The school’s American Advertising Federation team won its second national championship in 2005 and in 2004 the school’s Public Relations Society of America Bateman Team won second place in the national competition. We do not have enrollment caps on the number of students we accept into the mass communication program.  Every student who meets the school admission requirements will be accepted.
